Things to Do

Old Lake County Courthouse

Also referred to as the “Grand Old Lady,” the Old Lake County Courthouse was built in 1878 in the heart of Crown Point. The location — and the city itself — became known as the “Marriage Mill” due to the lack of a waiting period for a marriage license, making this a popular location to tie the knot. A variety of famous people were married in Crown Point, including Rudolph Valentino, Cassius Clay and Joseph Jackson, the patriarch of the Jackson 5. The second floor houses the Lake County Historical Society Museum with artifacts pertaining to the history of the county. The lower level hosts various shops and a restaurant. There are other stores to visit on the square around the building. The courthouse is located at 1 Courthouse Square in Crown Point.

Lake County Fairgrounds

Throughout the year, the Lake County Fairground hosts festivals and entertainment, including the Lake County Fair, covering a span of 10 days with rides, horse shows, food, live entertainment, animals and agricultural exhibits. Visitors also enjoy the Vintage Tractor & Farm Festival each July, which offers food, a flea market, antique tractors, garden tractors and gas engines, with various steam-powered demonstrations and more. Lake County Fairgrounds is located at 889 S. Court St. in Crown Point.

Bulldog Park

Bring the kids to cool off on the splash pad in the summer, enjoy a family skate on the ice rink in the winter or visit during one of the many events held year-round. During the summertime, view some beautiful classic cars at the Crown Point Car Cruise every Thursday evening and visit the farmers market on Saturdays. Each year, Bulldog Park hosts the Corn Roast, with farm-grown corn and live music, as well as the Taste of Crown Point, with cuisine from dozens of local eateries to enjoy. In the winter, along with open ice skating, watch the occasional local college hockey game. Bulldog Park is located at 183 S. West St. in Crown Point.

Erie Lackawanna Trail

The Erie Lackawanna Trail offers an excellent place to bike, walk or run. Thanks to its direct route from Crown Point to the Indiana Welcome Center in Hammond, it is a great way for many to have an active commute to and from work. The trail itself is part of the American Discovery Trail that stretches from coast to coast and connects 15 states by nonmotorized recreational trail, and it is recognized as a National Bike Route (#35). The Erie-Lackawanna Trail is the longest continuous trail in the area and is a smooth, easy ride for cyclists of all ages and skill levels.

Lemon Lake County Park

Create your own outdoor fun at Lemon Lake County Park. The lake offers a great site for fishing, and the 403-acre park itself holds five 18-hole championship disc golf courses. Take a stroll around the lake on the 1-mile paved trail, or explore the over 5 miles of primitive trails along the hilly, wooded terrain. There are also softball fields, open play areas, a large creative playground, two sand volleyball courts, a leash-free dog park and areas for picnicking. The trails are ideal for cross-country skiing during the winter, and the park also offers the perfect sledding hill. Lemon Lake County Park is located at 6322 W. 133rd Ave. in Crown Point.
