For a location that’s close to Chicago but with a less dense population and more small-town feel, head south of Lake County to Newton County. Much like the rest of the NWI region, it is filled with natural beauty, including its own wonder, the Kentland crater. Get a firsthand glimpse into what it takes to be a farmer at the popular Fair Oaks Farms, and participate in any number of outdoor activities throughout the year at the wildlife areas and parks.

Things to Do

Fair Oaks Farms

Get an up-close look at modern, sustainable farming through two different interactive experiences: the Dairy Adventure and the Pig Adventure. Once you’ve learned what it takes to care for livestock on the farm, sample delicious dairy products that were made from milk produced at Fair Oaks Farms. There is also an on-site cheese factory and a “Cowfé” where you can order scrumptious breakfasts and lunches that are made with — you guessed it — farm-fresh products and produce. Be sure to order some of Fair Oaks Farms ice cream before you end your day!

LaSalle and Willow Slough Fish & Wildlife Area

Partake in a hike, go hunting or fishing, do some birdwatching and more in the beautiful, natural wildlife areas. LaSalle is 4,511 acres and includes a 5.8 mile loop trail, perfect for hiking, running and birdwatching, offering the opportunity to see wildlife along the way. The Willow Slough Fish & Wildlife Area is an area of 9,956 acres, 1,200 acres of which are composed of open water, marshes and flooded crop land.

See the bison at Kankakee Sands

The Nature Conservancy introduced a herd of 23 bison to the Kankakee Sands prairie restoration project in 2016. Now, over 90 bison roam the 1-square-mile prairie, and the area is considered to be the easternmost conservancy preserve where bison can be found. Thanks to a designated, slightly elevated viewing area, visitors can easily and safely see the bison roaming and grazing.
