Lake County sees major wins in public safety and potential economic development
Lake County, Indiana residents have reason for optimism as 2024 draws to a close, with significant improvements in public safety and exciting possibilities for future economic growth on the horizon.
Gary experiences dramatic reduction in violent crime
The City of Gary has achieved remarkable progress in reducing violent crime through enhanced partnerships between local and federal law enforcement agencies. Gary Police Chief Derrick Cannon, along with federal partners, announced impressive statistics that demonstrate the effectiveness of collaborative crime-fighting strategies.
From January through December 2024, Gary experienced a 37% decline in homicides, with deaths dropping from 38 in 2023 to 24 in 2024. Non-fatal shootings also decreased significantly by 23%, falling from 123 incidents in 2023 to 95 in 2024.
"Building a safer Gary has been our administration's top priority, and a 37% drop in homicides proves that our focused, collaborative approach is saving lives," Mayor Eddie Melton stated. "While our work is far from over, these numbers signal a new chapter of peace and stability for our families and neighborhoods."
The success stems from increased cooperation between the Gary Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives Chicago Field Division, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Indiana, and the Lake County Prosecutor's Office. This partnership led to a nearly 41% increase in firearms recovered from violent offenders, rising from 261 in 2023 to 369 in 2024.
Cannon emphasized the importance of these partnerships, noting that "the 22% reduction in shootings and the seizure of over 300 illegal firearms demonstrate the effectiveness of our partnership with federal agencies like the ATF."
Federal prosecutions targeting firearms crimes increased by 25% during 2024, reflecting the coordinated approach to removing violent offenders from Gary's streets. Acting U.S. Attorney M. Scott Proctor praised the collaborative effort, describing Gary as "one of the great American cities" with "a bright future at the heart of northwest Indiana's continued revival."
The agencies utilized the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network to link recovered firearms to violent crimes in the Gary area, enabling investigators to connect cases and identify repeat offenders more effectively.
Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter highlighted the significance of multi-jurisdictional cooperation, explaining that "by identifying violent offenders early, sharing intelligence, and holding them accountable through both state and federal prosecutions, we are making meaningful progress toward a safer Gary."
Chicago Bears consider Northwest Indiana for new stadium
In a development that could bring national attention and significant economic benefits to the region, the Chicago Bears have officially expanded their stadium search to include Northwest Indiana. Bears President and CEO Kevin Warren announced the expansion after years of unsuccessful negotiations with Illinois officials regarding a proposed facility at Arlington Park.
Warren's open letter explained that the organization is keeping "every credible pathway open" due to legislative challenges in Illinois. The team cited a lack of legislative partnership, uncertainty around infrastructure commitments, and no indication that their project would be prioritized by Illinois state leadership in 2025.
"Consequently, in addition to Arlington Park, we need to expand our search and critically evaluate opportunities throughout the wider Chicagoland region, including Northwest Indiana," Warren wrote.
The Bears have proposed investing more than $2 billion privately into a new fixed-roof stadium, requesting public support only for surrounding infrastructure such as roads and utilities. This represents a significant private investment that could transform the chosen location.
Indiana Governor Mike Braun responded enthusiastically to the possibility, welcoming the Bears to consider the Hoosier State. "The Chicago Bears recognize Indiana's pro-business climate, and I am ready to work with them to build a new stadium in Northwest Indiana," Braun declared. "This move would deliver a major economic boost, create jobs, and bring another premier NFL franchise to the Hoosier State."
While no specific Northwest Indiana sites have been identified publicly, the formal acknowledgment of the region as a serious contender represents a historic opportunity. The Bears, one of the NFL's founding franchises, have played at Chicago's Soldier Field for decades.
Warren stressed that the team's commitment to Chicago remains strong, but emphasized that securing a modern stadium is essential for the organization's future competitiveness.
A potential Bears relocation to Northwest Indiana would bring numerous benefits including job creation, infrastructure development, increased tourism, and enhanced regional visibility on a national scale. The economic impact would extend far beyond game days, with year-round events, concerts, and other activities generating ongoing revenue for the community.
Looking ahead
These developments represent significant positive momentum for Lake County residents. The dramatic improvement in Gary's public safety demonstrates that collaborative law enforcement strategies can produce real results, creating safer communities for families throughout the region.
Meanwhile, the possibility of landing an NFL franchise represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity for economic transformation. The combination of improved public safety and potential major economic development projects positions Lake County for continued growth and prosperity.
Law enforcement officials emphasized that their work continues, with plans to maintain and expand successful crime-fighting partnerships in 2025. Similarly, the Bears' stadium search process will likely continue for months as they evaluate all available options.
For Lake County residents, these stories represent hope — proof that dedicated partnerships and strategic planning can create meaningful change in both public safety and economic opportunity.
